5 ways to look after tour mental health

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, it’s a good time to press pause and reflect on the importance of our mental wellbeing. 

Sometimes, we’re so busy with the day-to-day, it’s easy to let stress build up which, over time, can impact our health and happiness. 

Here are five ways to look after your mental wellbeing and start creating new, healthy habits:

1. Get outside more
Getting out into the fresh air can boost your mood, increase energy levels and give you a healthy dose of vitamin D. Studies have shown that just 20 minutes outside can reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone).

2. Manage your to-do list

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, look at your to-do list and decide what absolutely must be done today, and what can wait until tomorrow. 
According to the NHS, simply breaking up a big project into more manageable chunks can make you feel better.

3. Reframe your thoughts

It’s easy to slip into negative thought patterns when you’re stressed. Instead of focusing on what’s going wrong, try to remind yourself of the good things in your life. Writing down things you’re grateful for, every day, can really boost your mindset.

4. Talk to someone

They say ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’ for a reason. Just talking through your worries with a friend can often make you feel better. Or, if you’d rather talk to someone anonymously, there are lots of helplines you can go to for support.

5. Get more sleep

A good night’s sleep can make you feel ready to tackle anything. So, if you’re struggling to switch off, it can really impact your mental health. Getting into a good routine before bed can help train your body to relax, making it easier to drift off.

And remember, looking after your mental health is as important as looking after your heart. Don’t be scared to ask for advice or talk to someone.
